Why is SAM so difficult today?

Software Asset Management (SAM) is a process consisting of people, processes and tools. The way that SAM is mostly practiced today consists of many manual steps involving discovery and normalization from many different tools, consultants and in-house people.

Existing discovery tools are not designed for SAM

Existing discovery tools do not automatically discover the right products and metrics that are needed for SAM. This requires the SAM group to constantly go back to the operations group to get the discovery data they need to match their entitlement data. In addition important information such as SaaS usage is not available from the existing operations tools.
